2015
In 2015, Villa Renata, itself an independent art space, presented 20 projects for the first time under the name ∑-SUMME. At the same time, joint meetings were organised to facilitate exchange between the project operators. Subsequently, the Schwarzwaldallee art space invited all the spaces and projects to present themselves at the 2016 Basel Museum Night.
All 20 exhibition spaces and projects, which pursue independent and non-commercial interests, are run and brought to life with passion. They all have different focuses, qualities and strengths, and their orientations are diverse: regional, international, performative, project-oriented or experimental. These exhibition venues are of fundamental importance to Basel's cultural scene because they provide space for artistic experimentation and give emerging artists the opportunity to present their work to a wide audience.
To highlight the commitment of Basel's project spaces, the artist-curator collective Dr. Kuckucks Labrador invited all non-institutional art spaces to participate in their first joint exhibition. Under the title Σ, die Summe (Σ, the sum), their work was made accessible in a concentrated form, its relevance to the city's cultural life was made visible, and their networking was intensified.
In collaboration with Villa Renata, which acted as host, the Basel art spaces of a different kind all stayed under the roof of the villa for three weeks and presented their specific artistic concepts there. They presented their working methods individually and with a wide variety of media, with the participation of regional and national artists. The event was accompanied by a diverse supporting programme including discursive formats that focused on exchange within Basel's creative industries.
