2016
In November 2016, a renewed appearance by Basel's non-commercial art spaces under the name ∑ SUMME focused on a weekend, modelled on Museum Night, with each project taking place within its own four walls and with special opening hours and accompanying events. Organised bicycle tours from space to space connected the public and project participants. A joint opening took place in the Klingental exhibition space.
In 2015, Dr. Kuckuck's Labrador invited all of Basel's independent art spaces for the first time to present themselves to a broad public on a joint platform. Around 20 project spaces subsequently took part in a joint exhibition at Villa Renata for three weeks under the name ∑ (for sum). Due to the great success of this exhibition, it was clear to us that we wanted to continue the collaboration between Basel's project spaces in 2016. Unlike in 2015, when all the spaces gathered in one place to present themselves to the public, this time each project remained in its own premises and presented an exhibition. Following the example of Museum Night, there were special opening hours and a special supporting programme was offered at many locations. But unlike Museum Night, ∑ 2016 lasted an entire weekend.
On Thursday, 3 November, Dr. Kuckucks Labrador kicked off the weekend with a joint vernissage at the Keck Kiosk on Kasernenplatz, followed by a performance and concert in the Klingental exhibition space. On Friday, 4 November, several art spaces opened their exhibitions or offered initial supporting events according to a scheduled timetable (similar to the Regionale). On Saturday, 5 November, and Sunday, 6 November, the spaces were open and offered a rich palette of special events: artist talks, concerts, performances and culinary delights. On these two days, Dr. Kuckucks Labrador took interested visitors on a bicycle tour from space to space. Finally, the ∑ weekend concluded with a closing event at FABRIKculture Hégenheim. ∑ 2016 built on the success of the previous year: once again, around 20 project spaces took part, contacts between them were refreshed and deepened during joint preparatory meetings, and thanks to advertising and press reports, the spaces reached a wider audience than usual and were also visited by a ‘new’ audience.
