Summe

2017

In 2017, the exploration of the theme of video formed the common framework for SUMME. Each space and each project was invited to engage with the theme of video—in the broadest sense—in its own unique way. In addition, all participants submitted a video contribution of no more than ten minutes for the joint opening event at the Neues Kino.

Jana Kouril in Programmzeitung from November 2017:

"The “∑ Summe” show brings together various independent exhibitions in the Basel region and presents them within a joint timeframe. Around 30 non-institutional and non-commercial art projects are on display in this year's third edition. The focus is on the medium of video, i.e. current audiovisual productions such as short films, science fiction films and experimental films, but installation works and projections are also shown. The aim is to strengthen the exchange between independent artists in the region and to highlight the use of video as a medium. Unlike in 2016, when “∑ Summe” brought together various projects on a single festival weekend, this year's extensive video exhibition will take place over a period of two weeks. Nomadic projects that do not have a permanent exhibition venue will be hosted in fixed spaces. A wide variety of players, such as the Neue Kino in Klybeck, will become a meeting place for the moving image, while Flatterschaft in Gundeli will show musical works in cooperation with the Kleinbasel record store Klappfon. With Fabrikculture, the participating exhibition venues extend as far as Hégenheim in Alsace.
Back in 2013, Dr Kuckuck's Labrador – a free collective of artists and curators – had the idea of bringing together independent project spaces and various art projects in the Basel region. The first “∑ Summe” took place in 2015 at Villa Renata with 20 projects, which is also participating this year. The temporary festival platform, which provides the format, will be supplemented by a sustainable dimension in 2017: with the help of the media library of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, a permanent video archive is to be created. All contributions that were submitted and made it into the selection of the individual independent art project managers will be shown and preserved at the request of the artists."
